If you already hold a residence permit in Türkiye and want to continue staying under the same residence category, you generally need to submit an extension application before your current permit expires.

The process is not simply a matter of waiting until the expiry date and submitting a form. There are deadlines for starting and completing the application, document requirements that vary by residence category, and practical issues concerning legal stay while the application is pending.

When can you apply for a residence permit extension?

A residence permit extension application may be filed during the 60 days preceding the expiry date of the current residence permit.

In all cases, the application must be completed before the existing residence permit expires.

The Presidency of Migration Management expressly states that extension applications begin 60 days before expiry and must be made before the current permit expires.

Waiting until after the expiry date can create a significantly different situation. A late application is not automatically treated in the same way as a timely extension application.

In certain circumstances, an application may still be received after expiry where the foreign national has an acceptable excuse, but additional residence fees and penalties may arise. This should not be treated as an ordinary alternative to applying on time.

How is an extension application filed?

Residence permit extension applications are initiated through the official e-Residence (e-İkamet) system.

The information entered into the system should be reviewed carefully, particularly:

  • passport and travel-document information,
  • address information,
  • health-insurance information,
  • contact information,
  • the requested residence-permit period, and
  • the category under which the extension is requested.

Once the online application has been completed, the required supporting documents must also be submitted in accordance with the instructions issued for that application.

For extension applications, the current e-Residence system states that the documents must generally be sent to the relevant Provincial Directorate of Migration Management within five working days after the online application. The system also requires the application package to be sent separately for each applicant.

An online form by itself should therefore not be treated as the entire renewal process.

What documents are required?

The precise document list depends on the residence-permit category and the applicant’s circumstances.

Typical documents may include:

  • the application form,
  • passport copies and, where required, notarized copies,
  • the existing residence-permit card,
  • proof of health insurance where applicable,
  • proof of sufficient financial means where required,
  • residence/address documentation,
  • fee and card-fee payment records, and
  • documents supporting the particular residence category.

For example, a person residing in rented accommodation may be asked for documentation concerning the rental arrangement, while family, student and other residence categories require their own supporting evidence.

The applicant should use the current document list produced by the e-Residence system rather than relying on an old application package.

The Presidency of Migration Management currently provides category-specific document information through the official e-Residence system.

What happens if the residence permit expires while the extension is pending?

A properly completed extension application is different from simply remaining in Türkiye after a residence permit expires without applying.

Once the application has been properly received, an Residence Permit Application Document (İkamet İzni Müracaat Belgesi) may evidence the applicant’s status while the application is being processed.

Official guidance states that this document may provide lawful stay for the period specified under the applicable procedure and is also relevant to temporary exit and re-entry rules.

The Migration Administration states that persons holding an approved Residence Permit Application Document together with the relevant fee receipt may leave Türkiye and return without obtaining a new visa if they return within 15 days, subject to the applicable conditions. If they remain abroad for more than 15 days, ordinary visa rules apply.

A pending extension application therefore does not mean that the applicant should travel without checking what document has actually been issued and whether the exit/re-entry conditions are satisfied.

How long does the administration have to decide the application?

Residence permit applications are generally to be concluded within 90 days after the required information and documents have been submitted in full.

The 90-day period therefore does not necessarily start merely because the applicant first opened an application on e-Residence.

Where the administration requests additional documents, the request should be complied with within the deadline stated by the authority. Failure to complete requested documentation can result in the application being removed from processing or cancelled.

What if the online extension application is started but not completed?

Starting an application is not enough.

The current e-Residence system warns that an extension application must be completed by the end of the existing residence-permit period. An incomplete application may be automatically cancelled when the current permit expires, after which the person may need to proceed under the rules applicable to a first application rather than continuing the unfinished extension application.

This makes the difference between starting, completing, and documenting an application important.

Address information matters

Applicants must provide accurate and current residence and contact information.

This is relevant not only to eligibility but also because the administration may use the declared address, telephone number or email address to request additional documents or communicate about the application.

Where the applicant resides under a rental agreement, the current application instructions may require appropriate rental documentation. Depending on the circumstances, additional accommodation documents may also be requested.

A change of address should therefore not be ignored during the residence-permit process.

Does a residence permit allow you to work?

Not automatically.

A residence permit and authorization to work are legally separate issues.

Having a valid residence permit, or having a residence-permit extension application pending, does not by itself authorize employment in Türkiye.

Foreign nationals who intend to work must separately determine whether they need a work permit, qualify for a work-permit exemption, or already hold a status that authorizes the intended activity.

This should be checked before employment begins rather than after a residence-permit application has been filed.

Does applying on time guarantee that the extension will be approved?

No.

A timely application protects the applicant from having simply missed the extension deadline, but it does not create an automatic right to approval.

The applicant must continue to satisfy the requirements of the requested residence category.

The administration may request additional information, examine the applicant’s purpose of stay and, where necessary, conduct an interview.

A residence permit may be refused, cancelled or not renewed where the relevant legal conditions are not met. The decision should be notified together with information concerning available legal remedies.

Practical points before submitting an extension

Before completing an extension application, it is useful to check:

  1. the exact expiry date printed on the current residence card;
  2. whether the 60-day application window has opened;
  3. whether the residence category is still appropriate;
  4. whether passport validity is sufficient for the requested period;
  5. whether address records are current;
  6. whether health-insurance requirements are satisfied;
  7. whether the latest supporting-document list has been reviewed;
  8. whether all fees have been paid correctly; and
  9. whether the physical documents were submitted within the required time after the online application.

Residence-permit files often become problematic not because the applicant had no possible basis for an extension, but because the application was incomplete, submitted under the wrong category, or not completed within the required time.
